MISSION AND HISTORY
Harriet Hancock, mother of a gay son, founded the Columbia, SC Chapter of Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays in August of 1983. It was a chapter of the national Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays and the first chapter to be founded in the south.
The national organization later changed the name to Parents Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) and the local chapter also adopted the new name. Ms. Hancock served as president and facilitator of the organization until she had to step down in 2010. Due to the lack of leadership, the group did not hold monthly meetings but Ms. Hancock continued to be available to help those in need of support.
The group was later restarted when Mary Drew, the previous president of the chapter, saw a need to provide this support and resources to the Columbia area.
